Shwi no Mtekhala have created a name for themselves as one of the most established and loved musicians in the country and it was through hard work and love for music, their unique guitar sounds and relaxed vocals make them sound unique and their mission is to set trends in the maskandi scene.
The album has tracks about Shwi losing his mother and cousin on the same day, him being arrested and Mtekhala having his house and live stock burnt in his home in KwaZulu Natal.
Shwi ( Mandla Xaba) and Mtekhala (Rogers Magubane) both hail from KwaZulu Natal and they came to Johannesburg to find a way of making their dream of spreading maskandi sounds come true. Their love, musical skill, passion and patience are what made this duo stand out from the rest. This was evident when they scooped Awards, ‘being recognised at home is the best thing ever’ because home is where the heart is and there is no place like home. It is clear that quality music is what music fans want it doesn’t matter what the genre or language is.
The album boasts amazing guitar sounds, touching lyrics, beautiful vocals and a combination of all of these. Listening to the title track Uyob’unenhlanhla is a combination of scathamiya, maskandi, mbaqanga and the tempo of the song allows you sing along and dance as well. ‘Ngizothandaza’ is gospel track with a personal touch and the Shwi no Mtekhala feel. The track ‘Ngake ngaboshwa’ is a slow tempo song that speaks about Shwi’s experience in jail and how he made it through the whole time of the trial and how the fans were disappointed and how the enemies were celebrating their misfortunes. Though they faced hardships but this did not cloud them from seeing the good things that are happening in the country hence they did the song titled Vuvuzela in support for the national soccer team (Bafana Bafana) which encourages South Africans to keep blowing the Vuvuzela and singing shosholoza.
